Thunder's Defense Proves the Difference in Crucial Game 5 Victory

The San Antonio Spurs were hoping to force a deciding Game 7 in the Western Conference finals, but instead, they found themselves on the wrong end of a 112-99 blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5.

For the first time in the series, Victor Wembanyama was held to a series-low 20 points, a stark contrast to the Spurs' usual formula for success.

Shutting Down the French Phenom

The Thunder's defense was the key to their victory, limiting Wembanyama to just 7-20 from the field and holding him to four rebounds and three assists.

"We knew we had to make it difficult for him to get into his rhythm," said Thunder coach Mark Daigneault. "We didn't want to give him any easy opportunities, so we tried to make him work for everything."

The Thunder's defensive strategy paid off, as Wembanyama's struggles on the court were mirrored by his teammates, who shot just 43% from the field and committed 15 turnovers.

A Balanced Attack for the Thunder

On the other hand, the Thunder had four players score in double figures, led by Josh Giddey's 25 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.

"We've been talking all series about being more balanced on offense," said Giddey. "Tonight, we were able to get contributions from multiple guys, and it made it tough for the Spurs to keep up with us."

With the series now at 3-2 in favor of the Thunder, they have the opportunity to close out the series in Game 6 and advance to the NBA Finals.
